Meet Robert van Schalkwyk, Doctor of Chiropractic
M.tech. Chiro, DC, CCEP, ICCSD, CCFC
Chiropractor, Functional Movement, Rehabilitation, Personal Trainer
Choosing Chiropractic
The truth is, chiropractic chose Robert! After suffering a serious neck injury in his teens, he lived on a cocktail of various medications, and surgery was looking like his only hope. Not a great outlook when you are only 17—or any age, for that matter. Robert’s father had seen a chiropractor for his chronic headaches and suggested Robert at least consider chiropractic.
With nothing to lose, Robert gave it a try. After three months of intense chiropractic, he was back in the martial arts studio and back on the rugby field. Until his injury, he had never heard of chiropractic, and the results were more than he could’ve ever imagined. That’s when he decided to become a chiropractor himself. To this day, he receives regular chiropractic care to keep himself functional and active.

After qualifying with a master’s degree in chiropractic science in 1998 from Natal University of South Africa, Robert left with sound training in the Science, Art and Philosophy of Chiropractic (including University social life), and published his master’s thesis about neck injury in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics.
His 6-year chiropractic degree covered all aspects of all the human sciences, histology, human anatomy and physiology, neurology, biochemistry, microbiology, x-ray, diagnosis and more. Robert’s postgraduate qualifications include:
- ICCSD (International Certified Chiropractic Sports Diploma)
- CCFC (Certified Chiropractic Foot Care Program)

Special Interests
Robert has a keen interest in Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA), which he studied through the MoveNowUniversity program founded by Naudi Aguilar. He also completed the Functional Movement Patterns Course.
Functional Movement Patterns are about training organisms in relation to their biological characteristics. Simply put, it’s about getting humans moving as they are genetically designed to move. As Robert says, “It is not rocket science, and it has helped me to care for clients who had simply given up. Very powerful stuff.”
Working with Athletes, Dancers, Singers, and more…
Over the course of his career, Robert has been fortunate enough to work with many clients at the top of their respective fields, including:
- South African Rugby
- Gunston 500 (world champion international surfing)
